The Roy Orbison Tribute Show - Ipswich Civic Theatre

Athol Matcham's musical career began when he won a talent quest singing a Roy Orbison song.  He went on to become a lead singer in a rock and roll band, learning and refining his craft along the way.

This talented singer has been entertaining audiences for many years, performing in such diverse areas as rock and roll, light opera and country music.  A former Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds winner he has continued to impress fans and critics alike.

Athol has always incorporated Roy Orbison songs in his repetoire and when Roy passed away in 1988 Athol began his full tribute show. Backed by a six piece band Athol performs all Roy's hit songs with a voice and stage presence that would have the most dedicated fans believe it was the "Big O" himself.

This unique performer also finds time for charity shows and has performed all around Australia, performed at The Caven in Liverpool UK and with The Beatclub band for the Merseykats Charity in Liverpool. There are a few Roy Orbison tribute shows around the world today and most are good honest attempts, not many performers have the vocal range that made Roy Orbison unique , those very few that have, don't sound like the Big O. Athol has the range, the sound, and look, no-one sings Roy Orbison songs like Athol Matcham.

The Roy Orbison Tribute Show was awarded Tribute Show of the year 2003 at Clubs Queensland Entertainment of the year Awards and in June 2004 Athol won The Entertainer of the Year Award as well as The Tribute Show of the year and The Golden Service Award for 2004. Based in Queensland Athol and his band have a huge following and are in constant demand at all major venues.

Billion Dollar Ipswich Motorway Opens

Hundreds turned out on 15 May to witness the official opening of the $2.8 billion Ipswich Motorway project.

Federal Transport and Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese and his state counterpart Scott Emerson joined many other dignitaries to formally open the Motorway, following completion of the final $1.76 billion stretch linking Goodna to Dinmore.

Ipswich Mayor Cr Paul Pisasale said the Federally-funded motorway, which created 5,000 jobs during the four months and two years it took to build, was a boon to Ipswich.

This is about the entrance to one of the fastest-growing parts of Australia – now the infrastructure is in place, this is going to take a lot of pressure off Brisbane,” he said.

Cr Pisasale congratulated work crews who finished the project under budget and six months ahead of schedule.

I congratulate the construction people because they have built one of the most magnificent highways under enormously complex conditions with the very high traffic flows.

Every time they built a section of road, they had to build another road to divert the traffic.”

Three projects over eight years have widened the Ipswich Motorway to a minimum of six lanes from Oxley to Dinmore.

They include the Wacol to Darra stretch, including the new interchange of the Ipswich Motorway and the Centenary Highway ($824 million); the Ipswich Motorway/Logan Motorway interchange ($255 million); plus the Dinmore to Goodna stretch ($1.76 billion).
