Enabling Safe and Compliant UAV/RPAS Operations in Local Government | Conference Ipswich

Small remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), commonly referred to as drones or UAVs, are now becoming readily available to local government organizations as either an organic capability or purchased service. In the right hands, RPA can be an effective business tool for routine local government business operations.

In the wrong hands, they can be an unpredictable risk. This conference, supported by practical workshops has been specifically designed to inform Local Government decision makers on how these technologies can be safely acquired and employed in accordance with the Australian regulations.

The conference will also address how local authorities can manage the growth of this technology within their council boundaries to ensure the safety of their constituents. By attending this conference, you will see the pathways and understand how this technology can be acquired, applied and employed in the daily activities of local government in a safe and compliant operation.

The Ipswich dining scene has raised its game with the presence of international experienced English chef, Guy Farrow. Before arriving in Australia, Chef Guy worked in roles as Sous Chef at the famous five-star Savoy Hotel in London which has accommodated and dined hundreds of celebrity actors, rock stars, politicians and royalty. Prior to that, Chef Guy worked at the equally famous stately home of Cliveden in Taplow, home of Lord and Lady Astor and also the setting to the world renowned ‘ Profumo Scandal’ that occurred in the 1960’s. Guy is classically trained in cooking and was inspired by his ‘idol’ Raymond Blanc, OBE when Guy started his cooking career at Oakley Court Hotel. The hotel is situated on the River Thames near Windsor where he was trained by Masterchef, Murdo McSween.
At the Metro Hotel Ipswich International this Christmas, Guy brings his diverse experience in fine dining and event catering with a fabulous eight course Degustation Christmas Day lunch. There will be no traditional turkeys with all the trimmings or plum pudding with lashes of brandy custard, instead Guy will use local produce to include vegetables, seafood, salads, beef and a variety of home-made sauces,. Cost of the meal is $135 and a special vegetarian menu is also available.
Chef Guy understands foods that go with the climate and has not forgotten his days growing up in the UK. “I always remember waking up on Christmas morning, going for an early crisp walk to church with the family and the smell of log fires” he says. “When we arrived back home, it was opening of the presents and waiting for the hot traditional turkey complete with the trimmings, followed by huge servings of plum pudding with brandy custard” he adds. After extensive travelling Guy set up home in Brisbane spending three and half years teaching cooking at the Private Hospitality Training School. His vision as Executive Chef at the Metro Ipswich International is to work even closer with as many local producers from Ipswich to the Lockyer Valle and present special themed meals according to the seasonality of the produce. He is also working on setting up a cooking school to share his passion with as many people who are enthusiastic to learn his culinary skills and techniques.
When asked what his tip was for cooking Christmas lunch, regardless of hot or cold, his reply “Give yourself plenty of time. Prepare as much as possible a couple of days beforehand and have minimum cooking on the day. Keep it simple and use nice flavours” he said. “And relax and enjoy the company around you” he added.
Enjoy a family getaway this summer at Metro Hotel Ipswich International. Terrific value from $150 per night including a full buffet breakfast (for up to 4 guests) in our own Platform 9 Restaurant and accommodation in a self-contained, family-friendly apartment. Featuring a kitchenette with dishwasher, LCD TV with DVD player and Foxtel, minibar and complimentary Wifi, they are the ideal choice for families visiting Ipswich. Dancers from Queensland’s top Irish dance school will take audience members on a magical journey this month when they present Dance an Irish Dream at the Ipswich Civic Centre.

Almost 60 performers from Watkins Academy of Irish Dance will take part in the end of year performance on November 30 which will offer an afternoon of dynamic music, song and dance.

Principal teacher Sheryl Watkins said the performance tells the tale of a group of young Irish Dancers who are on a journey to become the best in the world.

“The dancers showcase their journey from those first dance steps through to the tough audition process and finally to being part of the world’s best Irish Show,” Ms Watkins said.

Ms Watkins said performers aged from four years to early thirties had rehearsed for many months to perfect award-winning choreographies.

“Our dancers know if they are willing to work for it, they can achieve anything,” she said.

“Dance an Irish Dream is a fitting tribute to the dedication of these committed and passionate dancers.”

Ms Watkins said Irish dance is an innovative and different technique that continues to intrigue.

“It’s such a passionate, athletic yet graceful art form,” she said.

“Our discipline is constantly evolving as new tricks in footwork, jumps and rhythms are introduced, keeping Irish dance fresh.”

Dance an Irish Dream will be held at 2.45pm on November 30.

Tickets on sale from November 11 from the Ipswich Civic Centre Ticket Office, Ipswich City Council Customer Service Centre or online at ipswichciviccentre.com.au

Family Fun Found All Over Ipswich

Workshops Rail Museum queensland ipswich

TIME flies when you're having fun and it goes even quicker when the kids are too.

It seemed Ipswich was not short of activities to keep the younger ones busy when we asked for some ideas on places to take the kids on Facebook.

Queens Park and Ipswich Nature Centre were popular choices for parents as was the Ipswich Art Gallery.

"Ipswich has heaps of fantastic parks, a picnic is always a great fun way to spend an afternoon with the kids," said Sharon Ross.

"So much to do in Ipswich, Art Gallery rocks but be prepared for you kids to want to spend hours there," said Janice Freiberg.

Other out of the box suggestions included a trip to the Riverheart Parklands and simply touring the city, looking at its history.

"Take them for a walk to look at heritage houses," said Lois Kilmartin.

"Ipswich has heaps, they are beautiful and all have information out front on plaques."

Other educational activities for the kids included trips to the Ipswich Library and the Workshops Rail Museum.

For those looking for more of a thrill the Tactical Ops Paintball fields in Rosewood were suggested for children aged 15 and over.

Trampoline park and indoor play centre Just Jump was also a popular choice for adventure seekers.

"Just Jump is at the sport complex across from Redbook Plaza. it's fun (we) went there last weekend," said Melissa Small.

Ipswich Cup Attracts Interstate and International Starters

IT is Ipswich's turn in the spotlight of the Queensland Racing Winter Carnival as the time-honoured Ipswich Cup is contested on Saturday.
The meeting, which has long held a reputation as much more than a race meeting, will again attract thousands of patrons, including 12,000 'pre-sold' revellers joining in the celebration.
The last-minute scramble for in-field marquee tickets is underway as the grandstand side marquees and individual in-field marquees have been sold out for some time.
But it is expected that in-field Corona marquee tickets will be sold until Saturday.
A healthy 160 nominations were received for the program and these include a good number of interstate and international gallopers.
Nominations received for the Ipswich Cup alone feature runners from Victoria in Peter Moody's Full of Spirit, Pat Carey's Angola, David Brideoak and David Feek's High Aims, and Michael Moroney's Garud.
Sydneysider Gerald Ryan has nominated Ironstein, there is a South Australian in John Hyam's Stella Lante, and there are two New Zealanders in Toowoomba Cup winner Military Move, and last year's unlucky Ipswich Cup second placegetter High Kin who is trained by Stewart McKinnon.
Bryan Guy won the Ipswich Cup last year with Anagold and this year he has Dienekes and Noisy Ocean nominated for the big race.
Top Queensland trainer Robert Heathcote has nominated Sam's Town and Volkhere and Group 1-winning Tony Gollan is targeting the Cup with Brave Ali.
Top Sydney trainers Chris Waller with Masthead and Joseph Pride with Sir Berus spearhead the nominations for the Eyeliner Stakes with a strong field looking to collect Ipswich's famous sprint race.

Saturday spoils shared
AT Eagle Farm last Saturday, there were three Group 1 races and the spoils were shared across the east coast of Australia.
Queensland's biggest race, the Stradbroke Handicap, carried $1 million for the winner.
This prizemoney was kept in the Sunshine State as the Natalie McCall-trained River Lad from the Sunshine Coast prevailed over fellow Queenslander Temple of Boom and exciting Sydney three- year-old filly Srikandi.
In the JJ Atkins for two-year- olds, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Almalad just got home over a fellow Sydneysider in the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau.
Brazen Beau headed the winner at the 200 metre mark, with Tony Gollan's Queensland-trained Looks Like the Cat in third.
The quinella of the Queensland Derby went to Victoria as the Henry Dwyer-trained Sonntag defeated Troy Corsten's Pinstripe Lad. Sydneysider Vilanova gave Chris Waller another Group 1 placegetter by running third.

Outcry over protest result
RACING Queensland and the Ipswich Turf Club received an unusual number of complaints from the public in relation to a protest result last Wednesday at Ipswich.
The race was the seventh of the day and across the line, Bryan Guy-trained and Janette Johnson-ridden Grapevine had a winning margin of a nose over the Gillian Heinrich-trained and Tim Bell-ridden Set Afire.
There was clear interference in the home straight.
While it may have appeared initially on television replays that this was caused by the winner laying out, RQ stewards found that the second horse had caused the winner to lay out after bumping its hind quarter, causing the winner to twist outwards.
Guy was happy with the result as it gave him a double for the day after Magic Cassius' win earlier in the day.
Gillian Heinrich had to be content with an earlier win by Walkin' Tall. That helped to push both she, on the trainer's premiership, and Tim Bell, on the jockey's premiership, each three wins clear with a month and a half of the season remaining.

Farewell Wayne Wilson
THE condolences of all committee, staff and members at the Ipswich Turf Club go out to the family of the great man, and great race caller Wayne Wilson.
Wayne was a terrific supporter of the ITC and of all industry stakeholders.
He will be sorely missed.

Swich On revive Calcutta
AS part of the festivities in the week leading up to Ipswich Cup Day, local charitable association Swich On is conducting a calcutta night.
This is on Thursday night at the North Ipswich Reserve.
It has been a decade or two since a calcutta night was held on the Ipswich Cup and all credit to the local association for reigniting this entertaining and potentially profitable evening.
The pool is promising to be around $10,000, giving the lucky buyer of the Ipswich Cup winner a handsome dividend.
The guest speakers include Group 1-winning trainer Tony Gollan and scallywag from the south Allan "Robbo" Robinson, who is famed for Footy Show appearances as well as an impressive set of statistics from his riding career.
Tickets may be booked at SwichOn.com.au.

Switch on of NBN to kick-start economic revival of CBD

Metro Hotel Ipswich International General Manager Earl Muir said the NBN would make his hotel an attractive location for business conferences

THE Ipswich CBD has entered the high-speed internet age with the NBN fibre optic network switched on this week.

The switch on is predicted to make the Ipswich CBD an attractive prospect for businesses and continue the CBD's revival.

The area covered by the network includes the city's major sites including the mall, Ipswich Hospital and court house, Icon Ipswich and St Andrew's Hospital.

More suburbs on the edge of the CBD are on the cusp of connection. NBN Co began work in Wood End, Coalfalls and West Ipswich 12 months ago.

Building preparation has begun at the Ipswich UQ Campus and in Churchill and Yamanto.

NBN Co spokesperson Ryan Williams said the roll-out of the high-speed internet was ongoing in the Ipswich region with 9500 homes already able to connect.

"Construction has commenced in to build the NBN to further 4000 homes and businesses in Ipswich and surrounding suburbs including Bundamba and Goodna," he said.

"The goal of the National Broadband Network (NBN) is to provide access to fast, affordable and reliable broadband to Australians - including families and business owners in Ipswich and surrounding suburbs.

"On average it takes around 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can access services over the NBN from phone companies and internet providers."

Metro Hotel general manager Earl Muir said the NBN would make his hotel an attractive location for business conferences.

The hotel's facilities are already popular among the business community, but NBN connectivity would make it more appealing, he believes.

"That would be of significant benefit to us because we have a lot of business and conference clients," he said.

"Last week we had an approach for a conference of 110 people who each needed to log onto our wi-fi.

"It's a big deal for us. We recently started offering in house wi-fi to our guests and that would mean a lot to have it for our guests."

Ipswich City Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the NBN was the most important construction of infrastructure Ipswich has seen for decades.

"It makes the CBD very attractive for further developments and that is the difference between the A-Grade NBN and the B-Grade," he said.

"I would put this down as the most significant piece of infrastructure to go into the CBD since sewage and running water."

Blair MP Shayne Neumann said the NBN should give the CBD a welcome kick-start for business investment.

"Ipswich city needs a real shot in the arm and the NBN will deliver it," he said.

"It's a policy of the former Labor Government being rolled out across the Ipswich CBD."

Information Expo to Help New ADF Arrivals in Ipswich

WELCOME: Carissa, Clint and Dusty McIlwain at the expo organised by the Defence Community Organisation.

FOR Australian Defence Force members and their families, packing their lives into cardboard boxes and moving to a new location can become a common experience.

ADF members can be required to relocate on posting every two to three years.

That means military families have to get used to regularly adjusting to new surroundings.

To make the experience a less bewildering ordeal, the Defence Community Organisation rolled out the welcome mat to families on new postings to RAAF Base Amberley with an Information Expo.

Cathy Dellit and J.J. Millar at the information expo at the Ipswich RSL

The event, held at the Ipswich RSL, featured numerous stalls offering useful local knowledge, giveaways and information about Ipswich; from child care services to support organisations.

Each year, more than 500 families are relocated into the Ipswich region as a result of new postings.
Among them was vehicle mechanic Clint McIlwain who was posted in Amberley and arrived in Ipswich four weeks ago with his wife Carissa and five-month-old son, Dusty.

Mrs McIlwain said she attended the expo to obtain useful community information - all in the one location.

"I haven't found the move too difficult so far," the 29-year-old said.

"I'm starting to get to know more people...it helps if you have a kid because there are a few social circles for mums."

Mrs McIlwain said events like the DFO expo definitely made life a lot easier though when relocating.
