Metro Hotel Ipswich International has been flood lit in the alternating colours of red, green and blue in the 12 days leading up to Christmas, lighting up at 6.00 pm every night.
Mayor Pisasale was on hand to officially turn on the lights last night, with the hotel’s central location in Ipswich making it a shining beacon for locals and tourists alike and bringing some additional Christmas spirit to the city.

“As a vital member of the Ipswich community, Metro Hotel Ipswich International is keen to help foster a strong community spirit in the lead up to Christmas, and we believe turning the lights on in the colours of Christmas will make the hotel stand out on the Ipswich City skyline and add to the festive cheer.

Ipswich's First Indigenous Art Centre Opens at Mayor Paul Pisasale's Former Restaurant Colliers

Hopefully it will be a space for all kinds of Indigenous facilitators, from jewellery makers to dance, story-telling, even weapon makers
Artist Annie Clarke
Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale's former iconic restaurant, Colliers, has been transformed into the city's first Indigenous art and cultural centre, west of Brisbane.
Contemporary Indigenous artist Annie Clarke is behind the project.
Ms Clarke began painting at the age of eight, when she learnt traditional bark painting.
She came up with the idea of creating an art precinct when she started using the old Colliers house to work on her art.
"I originally started using it as just a studio - it had no power or electricity and it was cold," she said.
Ms Clarke says she soon realised the space could also be used by others.
She approached the Ipswich City Council with the idea of turning it into an Indigenous art and culture hub.
"I think a space like this gives a chance for the wider community to come and learn about Indigenous culture and it also gives the Indigenous a chance to showcase who they are and teach about their culture, their way," she said.
Colliers has been vacant for years, and was relocated in 2010 from Roderick Street in Ipswich Central to the Westfalen Community Gardens, a former coal mine in Collingwood Park.
Workers from Challenge Employment and Training have helped to restore the house to its former glory.
Richard Lindner, director of Challenge Employment and Training, says the benefits of restoring the house go beyond providing work experience for apprentice tradesmen.
"It brings in diversity," he said.
"It gives us a new approach and access to the community we're here to support."
Mr Lindner says offering art classes and other cultural workshops will be a new challenge for the organisation.
"For that reason alone, Annie has brought something to us that is very valuable in terms of engagement with a whole different cohort of individuals that we probably wouldn't have had access to in the past," he said.
Councillor Pisasale says he is excited to see his old restaurant become useful again.
"I wanted the restaurant to have not only a new lease of life, but something that's contributed to our city and Australia," he said.
"We don't put enough emphasis on our Indigenous culture and our Indigenous community and I'm just proud to be able to be part of it."
The centre officially opened last Saturday and Ms Clarke hopes it will eventually host a range of workshops.
"Hopefully it will be a space for all kinds of Indigenous facilitators, from jewellery makers to dance, story-telling, even weapon makers," she said.
But the project is still at least $45,000 short of completion.
Ms Clarke says it is a cause worth supporting.
"It gives the Indigenous community a sense of pride to see that people want to come and learn about their culture in a positive way," she said.
"I think it will make a huge difference - there's been such a positive feedback from the amount of people that have heard about this they can't wait to see it happen."

Santa Delivers Festive Spirit to Ipswich

Santa has a chat on Saturday with excited youngsters Blaise and Corey Wyatt.

SANTA Claus made a spectacular arrival in Ipswich aboard his sleigh, pulled by real-life reindeer Vixen and Cupid.

Hundreds of shoppers turned out to welcome Santa and Mrs Claus as they weaved their way through the Riverlink shopping centre on Saturday.

Their arrival was celebrated with a magical parade featuring fairies, angels on roller-skates, a gingerbread man, elves and carollers.

Families lined the aisles as the procession made its way around the centre before concluding at the Gasometer area outside Cold Rock, where children were able to pet Vixen and Cupid and the other baby reindeer.

The parade was complemented by a Christmas elves song and dance stage show, face painting, craft demonstrations and Christmas carols.

HO, HO, HO: Santa with his helpers and reindeer tour Riverlink Shopping Centre on Saturday

Riverlink marketing manager Robyn Bannister-Tyrrell said Santa's arrival was well received by customers.

"We wanted to get shoppers into the Christmas spirit and enjoying themselves while doing their Christmas shopping," Mrs Bannister-Tyrrell said

She said Santa's arrival would be followed by a series of family fun and entertainment events, including carollers and visits from the man in red in the lead-up to Christmas.

Children will be able to have their photo taken with Santa daily in the East Mall, near Medicare, until December 24.

Winners All Round as Favourite Takes Cup

PUNTERS were out in force – and style – as Melbourne Cup fever hit Ipswich yesterday.
And the result couldn’t have been better for Ipswich race fans as the hot favourite Fiorente,
ridden by three-time winning jockey Damien Oliver, stormed home at Flemington.

Loud cheers erupted around friends Aislinn Dwyer and Jessica McGill inside the Char’d restaurant as the number six horse charged past the post, securing a first Melbourne Cup victory for legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse.

“I had a feeling,” an ecstatic Ms Dwyer said. “My uncle’s mother said number six and I had a weird feeling for Fiorente.
“She had me saying six all day and I thought I’ve got to win.”

Nigel Bates was thrilled with his small win, saying he always backed a Gai Waterhouse horse.
“I went with the favourite, but I’m a huge Gai Waterhouse fan,” he said. The PA Hotel was awash with colour for the fashions on the field event, but it was Sheree Thorton, of Bundamba, who took out the style stakes with her eye-catching lime and black number.

Metro Hotel Ipswich International was the next best thing to being trackside at Flemington, with party-goers enjoying a picnic-themed luncheon and all the action on the big screen.

Samuel Johnson is Riding Around Australia on a Unicycle to Raise $1 Million for Cancer Research!

Samuel Johnson is riding around the Australia on a unicycle to raise $1 mill for cancer research!
MISSION:

Samuel Johnson’s sister Connie is dying of Breast Cancer so he’s setting out on an epic challenge. He’s riding around the Australia on a unicycle!

It’s all about keeping his promise to Connie:
- Raise a million dollars for Breast Cancer research
- Raise awareness of the disease that’s killing her
- Break the Guinness World Record for the longest distance on a unicycle.

It sounds insane, but Samuel’s good to go. He’s been training, he’s ditched the beers, he’s eating... well, he’s eating, and he’s frozen some of his sperm - under advice of doctors - in case the uncomfortable journey has a lasting effect on his closest mates.

Too easy? Connie thought so. That’s why she’s asking Australia to come up with some tough sponsored challenges.

Samuel and Connie want to remind every Australian woman about the need to be 'breast aware' in an effort to promote early detection and improve survival rates.

Their message is simple: 'Don't fall into the booby-trap, be breast aware!'
THE STORY:

Samuel and Connie were born a year apart, so they’ve always been close. Growing up they played together, explored the neighbourhood together... and fought cancer together.

Connie has fought cancer three times in her life and Samuel has been with her every step of the way. This time things are different. Connie is dying and she doesn’t have much time left.

ABOUT CONNIE:

Connie is vibrant, loving, compassionate, tough and inspiring. She's a mother of two beautiful boys. She's 35 years old. And she's dying of Breast Cancer.

This is her third battle with cancer. At the age 11 Connie, with the help of early detection and chemotherapy, fought off a very rare and aggressive bone tumour in her leg. At 22, she overcame a tumour in her womb, again with the help of early detection and treatment.

This time Connie has Breast Cancer and it’s terminal. It has spread to her lungs, liver, pelvis, spine and knee. This time it's terminal and she has a life expectancy of 6-12 months.

Nothing can prepare you for to say goodbye to your kids at such a young age. That’s why Connie is hard at work to raise Breast Cancer awareness. Early detection is the key to survival and Connie wants everyone to know it, so she’s sent her brother around Australia on a unicycle.

ABOUT SAMUEL:

Samuel is one of Australia's most recognisable personalities in the Australian entertainment industry.

He's best known for his roles on The Secret Life of Us, Crackerjack, Underbelly II and Network Ten’s Rush. He’s made a number of TV guest appearances... and he’s the voice of Vodafone, Suzuki and Pedigree.

Plenty of career accolades have come his way. He’s enjoyed multiple Logie nominations, an AFI Award and an Australian Centenary Medal in the 2000 Queens Honours list. He's very proud of all of this, but none of it is as important to him as his sister.

That’s why he’s setting out on this gruelling journey around Australia. Nothing will stop him keeping his promise to Connie.

THE WORLD RECORD:

There are plenty of Guinness World Records to break, but it’s hard to find one as tough as this: The longest journey travelled on a unicycle.

So how far is that exactly? Well the current record holder, a bloke by the name of Lars managed 14,686.82km across 48 states of America. Pretty impressive!

We’re not sure why he stopped, but Samuel is determined to push the record past the 15,000km mark. And he’s going to do it across Australia.

A City Wide Celebration - Moon Festival

IPSWICH'S Chinese community hopes to get the rest of the city involved in its first annual Moon Festival, to be held on September 21.
The Moon Festival is a traditional family celebration in the Chinese community, but one that has not been enjoyed in Ipswich until members of the Australian Culture Link Association's Alpha Chinese School got the ball rolling.
ACCLA president Windy Wu said the event aimed to promote the exchange of cultures, crafts, knowledge and ideas between ordinary people.
"In Chinese culture and tradition, Moon Festival is a day for family to be together and have fun," Ms Wu said.
"To the Chinese the full moon represents the whole family siting at the round table and there are many legends and stories associated with Moon Festival."
The event, to be staged at Ipswich Central State School Hall, will feature Chinese music, drama, singing, dancing and other cultural performances.
Members of the public will be able to enjoy the activities for free.
Ms Wu said the Australia China Culture Link Association was a non-profit organisation promoting cultural exchange between China and Australia through language lessons in both countries.
Alpha Chinese School is part of ACCLA and it has been providing local community classes of Chinese language and culture.
"This is the first time that the Chinese Moon Festival will be accessible to Ipswich, and we have created this event as an opportunity for all cultures to come together," Ms Wu said.

Camp Quality 1000K Bike Ride - Ipswich to Newscastle

35 cyclists and one award-winning singer to cycle 1,000 km from Ipswich to Newcastle
From September 6-15, 35 cyclists, 20 support crew, two wacky puppets and award-winning country singer Catherine Britt will all embark on a 1,000km journey from Ipswich in Queensland to Newcastle in NSW, raising funds and awareness to create a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia.
The epic cycle challenge - the Glencore 1,000kms4Kids - will begin in Ipswich on September 6 and pass through the towns of Toowoomba, Warwick, Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Uralla, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Murrurundi, Singleton and finish in Newcastle on September 15.
Riders
Riders will cycle from Ipswich, Qld, to Newcastle, NSW
The event has grown year on year - in 2011, 18 cyclists participated and raised $115,000. Last year, 30 cyclists participated and raised $250,000. This year the goal is for the 35 participating cyclists to raise $300,000 - which would be enough for Camp Quality to support 75 families who have a child living with cancer for the next year.
Along the cycle route, the McDonald's Camp Quality puppets will perform at primary schools in a fun and educational show which teaches pupils how to be supportive and understanding of children living with cancer.

Donna George, Camp Quality Fundraising Coordinator, said: "Taking Camp Quality's message on the road in this way is such a great way for us to engage local communities with our work. As well as raising funds to help create a better life for every child living with cancer, our puppet show travels with us to teach pupils how to be supportive of kids with cancer. In addition, the cyclists and support crew spread around Camp Quality's infectious mantra of optimism and fun therapy - so I urge local communities along the route to turn out in force to cheer the cyclists on and enjoy the exciting atmosphere."
Country singer Catherine Britt said: "I've been so inspired by the heartbreak cures that Camp Quality offers to families going through such a traumatic time, that I've agreed to cycle all 1,000kms of the challenge. It's going to be an amazing 10 days - I only hope my legs last the distance!"
Catherine
Country singer Catherine Britt is proud to be part of 1000kms4Kids

On Sunday September 8, the mayor of Tenterfield, Peter Petty, will be riding into Tenterfield with the cyclists.
Cyclists will arrive at The Junction Hotel, Newcastle from 11am on Sunday September 15 for a major welcome home party and family fun day. Festivities will start at 9.00am and food, live entertainment, street stalls, balloons, face painting and some Camp Quality style fun therapy will be on offer. All locals are invited to attend.
